The mystery of the red blood

Everyone knows that:
"The blood is red"
Look at its structure to discover how and why:
Plasma, erythrocytes, leukocytes.

Leukocyte in another way white blood cell
Very important in an immune system,
but it dosn't give a red color.

Thrombocytes are necessary
to stop bleeding by clotting blood vessel injury,
but it doesn't give a red color.

Maybe plasma? Rather not.
It consists of proteins, ions and water of course
It transports substances, maintains a steady level of blood pressure
It helps in blood coagulation,
but the red color isn't its function.

Erythocytes? Correct!
It's a topic of this day
It's responsible for the red color of the blood.

It's time for more information about red blood cells.
The main function is transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. How is it possible?

         1) The mature erythrocytes (in human and mammals) loose a cell nucleus and most organelles.
It makes that the red blood cells don't use the oxygen for their own needs.
         2) Erythrocytes are shaped as biconcave disks in order to easier difusion of gases.

Red blood cells are developed in the red bone marrow. These cells live about 120 days,
and they are reduced in a liver and a spleen.

The most important component of erythrocytes is a hemoglobin.
The hemoglobin is a protein, which is responsible for red color of the erythrocytes and the
whole blood, and it's also responsible for transport oxygen. The hemoglobin has a quaternary
structure, which consists of four subunits. Each subunit is composed of a protein chain
associated with a non-protein heme group.
The heme group consists of an Fe iron held in the centre of a heterocyclic ring.

         An interestings facts:
         - the oxygenated blood is brighter than the deoxygenated blood.
         - the blood oxtgenation is a process of addition oxygen with the blood with no  change a
           valency of iron.
         - the lower atmospheric pressure and smaller amount of oxygen in the air, the less erythrocytes
is in the blood of people, who live in mountans (8 mln erythrocytes in 1µg of blood).
